Mental Exercises

 

One of the benefits of using Adrian’s services is that you not only will make your body stronger and more spectacular, but you will also make your mind stronger and more spectacular. Hence, 15 minutes of EVERY session is devoted to mental exercises. This is an integral component of the service and is what really distinguishes Adrian’s services from other Personal Trainers. The goal of these mental exercises is to ensure that the spectacular changes you make in your body are maintained for life. After all, any one can exercise, eat sensibly, and maintain their stress levels for a short period, however, few people do it long-term.

The first 16 mental exercises focus on a variety of PSYCHOLOGICAL topics and techniques. These include the process of change (especially the understanding of the processes and stages of change), happiness enhancement, stress management, diaphragmatic breathing, and meditation.

Once clients have been with Adrian for 16 sessions, the focus then changes to NUTRITION for the next 26 sessions. The topics include an introduction to nutrition, a nutrition quiz, the advantages and disadvantages of weight reduction pills, when should you eat, vitamins, minerals, alcohol, caffeine, milk, water, tea, beverages, the glycaemic index, fiber, antioxidants, fast food, grains, vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, poultry, dairy and oils, what should you eat, the effects of fasting, and how much should you eat.

Once clients have been with Adrian for 42 sessions, then the focus moves back to PSYCHOLOGY for the next 37 sessions. This is where Adrian makes the biggest impact. Clients by this stage understand Adrian's approach very well, feel very comfortable with his approach, have a good understanding of nutrition, and a basic understanding of psychology, and are now challenged to grow as a person more than they have ever done. The topics now discussed include why most individuals do not change, how people can change, exercises to increase happiness, the advantages of decreasing neuroticism, the advantages of increasing optimism, internal locus of control, self-esteem, and extroversion, mental imagery, changing dysfunctional thoughts, values, prioritising goals, and most importantly getting a better understanding of who you are and what you want out of life.

The sessions are educational in nature, but have a basic counselling component built into them. The counselling uses a combination of motivational interviewing and solution-focused therapy. A handout is provided in each session.
